Kingston’s New Wheels

Friday, 26 December 2008

Enjoying some family time in the afterglow of Christmas, Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin Rossdale were spotted taking their sons Zuma and Kingston to an after-Christmas shindig yesterday (December 26).

The “Hella Good” songstress and her “Little Things” rocker hubby looked a bit worn out by the holiday festivities as they toted their two little ones past the paparazzi.

Speaking of kids, Gavin recently cleared up a rumor regarding his eldest’s moniker, telling press, “The stuff you read on Wikipedia especially is such rubbish. They have some stranger as my mother and the family names are all wrong. I’d like to complain to Mr. Wikipedia. How do you do that? Kingston is named for Kingston, Jamaica, not Kingston Ferry. So it’s really not that traditional. At least I don’t think there are a lot of kids named for Kingston, Jamaica.”

And it seems little Kingston is already showing signs of his musical genes. “He likes anything with a good beat. He’s big into drums. He likes my record. He likes Gwen’s record. He plays some Pharrell and Snoop. Anything that’s good for head-bobbing. He’s a good head-bobber.”

Enjoying a post-holiday lunch out, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were spotted along with their son Zuma at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant in Beverly Hills, California yesterday (December 29).

The “I’m Just a Girl” singer and her “Glycerine” rocker hubby looked to be having a marvelous time as they toted their son and a doggy bag of leftovers out to their Range Rover, smiling all the way.
And though Gwen and Gavin’s other son Kingston was absent from yesterday’s lunch outing, it sounds like he had quite a pre-Christmas romp at a local roller skating rink just days earlier.

According to an eyewitness at Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale, “It looked like it was Kingston’s first time roller skating, and the little guy looked so cute. Kingston tried to skate between Gwen and Gavin, but even though they were holding his hands, Kingston’s legs kept skating in different directions so it was impossible for him to stand up.”

Gavin Rossdale-Kissmas Bash review

Gavin Rossdale surprised this writer with a gorgeous set of songs from his recent self-titled solo debut, and a host of gems from his time fronting the ’90s British rock outfit Bush. The stripped-down environment served Rossdale’s songs quite well. Performing with just his own acoustic guitar, voice and a fellow acoustic player who offered stellar harmonic bits to the proceedings, Rossdale stole the show handily.

This was mostly due to the warmth and intimacy of his singing, which was the best I’ve ever heard from the guy in the more than 10 years I’ve been seeing him live. The new songs, which were not remarkable in their recorded form — considerable over-production made them glossy and soulless — were quite moving in this subtle acoustic presentation.

The Bush songs Rossdale chose to perform greatly benefited from this arrangement as well, probably because they were written as simple, melodically appealing songs with a folk bent in the first place. So “Glycerine” was simply beautiful, and “Come Down” perhaps even more so.

Rossdale also offered a nice take on the Fleetwood Mac chestnut “Landslide,” his coguitarist ably handling the intricate finger-picking figures, while Rossdale poured his heart out. Surprisingly, considering how incongruous Rossdale’s music was in the general mix of the evening’s cheese-pop, the crowd was all over the guy, greeting every song in the too-brief set with enthusiasm.
